Litzner Less Faster or More Slower cores depends on if you'll be using Dedupe or Compression, and the speed of your drives. Dedupe and Compression are multi-threaded, so get better performance with more cores.

Most storage boxes will benefit from having a faster CPU, however normally the hard drives are much slower than the CPU so it's a non-issue. The overheads percentages are relative to the total data space. The minimum free and usable spaces percentages are relative to the total data space minus the total overhead. The usable data space is the total data space minus the total overhead and the minimum recommended free space. It's the only other field the other one is the drive size field where you can put a decimal number.

I'd probably be looking at a series Opteron with a Supermicro motherboard at that point. Is that really necessary, or should I be able to get by with 32gb of memory with a cheaper Exxv3 Xeon setup? If 32gb of RAM is still woefully inadequate, would 64gb 4x 16gb sticks do, or would I need to shoot for 96gb?

In Oracle Solaris 11, you can use the deduplication dedup property to remove redundant data from your ZFS file systems. If a file system has the dedup property enabled, duplicate data blocks are removed as they are written to disk.

The result is that only unique data is stored on disk and common components are shared between files, as shown in Figure 1. In some cases, deduplication can result in savings in disk space usage and cost. However, you must consider the memory requirements before enabling the dedup property. Also, consider whether enabling compression on your file systems would provide an excellent way to reduce disk space consumption.

Use the following steps to enable deduplication. Note that it is important to perform the first two steps before attempting to use deduplication. Determine if your data would benefit from deduplication space savings by using the ZFS debugging tool, zdb.

If your data is not "dedup-able," there is no point in enabling dedup. Deduplication is performed using checksums. If a block has the same checksum as a block that is already written to the pool, it is considered to be a duplicate and, thus, just a pointer to the already-stored block is written to disk. Therefore, the process of trying to deduplicate data that cannot be deduplicated simply wastes CPU resources.

ZFS deduplication is in-band. This means that deduplication occurs when you write data to disk and impacts both CPU and memory resources. For example, if the estimated deduplication ratio is greater than 2, you might see deduplication space savings. In the example shown in Listing 1, the deduplication ratio is less than 2, so enabling dedup is not recommended. This step is critical because deduplication tables consume memory and eventually spill over and consume disk space. At that point, ZFS has to perform extra read and write operations for every block of data on which deduplication is attempted, which causes a reduction in performance.

Furthermore, the cause of the performance reduction is difficult to determine if you are unaware that deduplication is active and can have adverse effects. A system that has large pools with small memory areas does not perform deduplication well.

Some operations, such as removing a large file system with dedup enabled, severely decrease system performance if the system doesn't meet the memory requirements. Be sure that you enable dedup only for file systems that have dedup-able data, and ensure your systems have enough memory to support dedup operations.

Any read requests for data in the cache can be served directly from the ARC memory cache instead of hitting the much slower hard drives.

At some point, adding more memory is just cost prohibitive. That is where the L2ARC becomes important. The L2ARC is the second level adaptive replacement cache. These SSD drives are slower than system memory, but still much faster than hard drives. More importantly, the SSD drives are much cheaper than system memory. When cache drives are present in the ZFS pool, the cache drives will cache frequently accessed data that did not fit in ARC.

This means the hard drives receive far fewer requests, which is awesome given the fact that the hard drives are easily the slowest devices in the overall storage solution.

This hybrid solution offers considerably better performance for read requests because it reduces the number of accesses to the large, slow hard drives.

Things to Keep in Mind There are a few things to remember. When you add cache drives, you cannot set them up as mirrored, but there is no need to since the content is already mirrored on the hard drives.

The cache drives are just a cheap alternative to RAM for caching frequently access content. Since all of the storage drives would already be ultra fast SSD drives, there would be no performance gained from also running cache drives.
