There are several ways that a motherboard with four memory banks can host common amounts of memory: 1GB or 2GB. Note: Not all motherboards have 4 slots. Some have more, some less. You may have many reasons for choosing different arrangements of memory in a PC.
Upgrading memory is easier later, when memory slots are available. Some PCs have a pairing requirement. The memory slots are organized in pairs, and every pair must have the same DIMM size. For example, you can have 3GB of memory in a PC with four memory banks. Yes, you may end up throwing away memory to upgrade. Not all DIMMs are alike. There are several common types.

Your computer uses only one memory type, and you must pick a DIMM that matches the type. Fill all RAM slots or not?
As far as I know, DDR3 speed memory if used may be recognized, but would run at as the Xeon series support and speeds. In my experience, the best way to ensure successful memory upgrades is to concult the specifications- see above, and then remove a RAM module and record the exact information on the RAM used in the system. And, again, in a T, the memory should be in sets of three and installed in the order shown in the manual- typically the first three and largest modules in slots 1,3, and 5, and the second three and if smaller, in slots 2,4, and 6.
If not, you probably should skip this upgrade because there's always a small risk a flash upgrade will brick the motherboard. It looks to me like the one at Amazon is " Crucial " brand and the one at Crucial. Ballistic is usually faster with lower latency, and usually more expensive. If all they're offering is MHz, you won't be taking full advantage unless everything installed is MHz. Whether you'd actually notice Max ram is 24 gigs aka 6 X 4 gig. Its Tri channel ram so you want to use 3 or 6 matched modules.

As other have posted if you have 2 sticks of ram the general rule is to put them in alternating slots. So 1 stick in the first slot, miss the second, place the second stick in the third slot, and then leave the fourth free as well. Ok, I had it right just wanted to make sure.

Ram operates on it's own, however when dual channel ram exists, ram can operate together, speeding up and sharing access times, triple channel means 3 modules are paired to work together and quad is 4. The higher the 'ram' channel, the more data can be pushed through, if by mixing modules you reduce this from quad channel to dual channel, ram bandwidth is effectively halved.

Basically easch channel gets a 1x16GB and 1x8GB. Case2: this one I am not sure how to smear RAM sticks for a better compatibility. In order to get dual, triple or quad channel configurations, you put in identical ram in each of the 2, 3 or 4 slots accordingly, if you have to mix makes or sizes, do so in the same sequence in 2, 3 or 4s.
Again, as above, for servers this is clear, but highest capacity goes closest to the CPU too- typically. However I couldn't find a definitive answer on mixing sizes or vendors.

In fact my scenario is a bit more complicated and purchasing decision will depend on my findings, specifically preserving best compatibility and 4 channels.
For what it's worth, my scenario is the following. I have 8x16GB all Crucial sticks, 4 channels, so 2 sticks per channel. Until one stick failed uncorrectable error. I can't find Crucials anymore to matchbut I can find a pair just 2 of Kingstons with similar everything. One option would be pulling 1x failed and 1x good Crucial both sitting on the same channel and plugging Kingstons.Installing memory modules is straightforward. Most recent motherboards automatically detect installed memory modules regardless of the slot they occupy, but it is good practice to install modules in the lowest numbered slots first.
For example, if a single-channel memory motherboard has four memory slots, they will be numbered 0 to 3 or 1 to 4. Fill slot 0 or 1 first, then the other slots sequentially as you add modules. If you are installing memory in a dual-channel memory motherboard, install memory modules in pairs, filling the lowest numbered slots first. For example, if the motherboard has two slots each for channel A and channel B, numbered 0 and 1, fill the slots for channel A slot 0 and channel B slot 0 first.
Some motherboards require higher-capacity modules to be installed in lower-numbered slots. That rule is not invariable, though.
A few motherboards require smaller modules to be installed in the lower banks. Some motherboards don't care which module you install in which bank. Best practice is to check the manual before installing memory.
If no documentation is available, experiment by moving modules around. If some or all of the memory is not recognized during the boot-time memory check or in CMOS Setup, power down the system, rearrange the modules, and restart the system. If all memory is recognized, you can safely assume that you have the modules installed correctly. To install a DIMM, locate a free memory slot and pivot the ejector arms on each side of the socket as far as possible toward the horizontal.
Align the notches and slide the DIMM straight down into the socket. Some motherboards particularly cheap ones are thin and very flexible. The pressure required to seat a DIMM may flex the motherboard enough to crack it.
When you install a DIMM in a motherboard that's already in the case, pay close attention to how much pressure you're applying. If the motherboard appears to be flexing too much, remove the motherboard from the case before installing the DIMM. This is not the first time that I have heard of this phenomenon, and it is definitely not specific to Apple. Why is this the case?
With equal amounts of memory in both slots, memory can be interleaved so that successive chunks of memory alternate slots. That way, memory access gets distributed to both slots almost perfectly evenly, allowing their bandwidth to combine.

With uneven amounts, memory cannot be interleaved and has to be mapped first to one stick and then the other. A program that is accessing a large contiguous chunk of memory will find almost all of its access going to one stick and there will be no bandwidth combination.
The likely technical explanation here is that your MacBook motherboard supports dual-channel architecture and thus requires two identical memory modules. Benchmarks suggests that it gives a percent performance boost. When two non-identical memory modules are used, the motherboard will run the memory modules at the speed of slowest module.
